Windsor Jubilee Parade today:
Gareth: I was quite interested to see there were some women marching with the soldiers. Are they allowed to fight? Is this a new thing they’ve just brought in?
I had planned to go and watch the parade from the recommended venue of the Long Walk, partly as I thought it would give a good long view of the parade going up into Windsor and party in order to shoot the castle in the background of the shots. It also meant I would be able to see the huge TV screens which were due to broadcast the events within the castle
However due to misinformation and miscommunication with both the public and the police the parade did NOT go the length of the Long Walk but only covered a small section nearest Windsor Castle. The area nearest the castle (where the big screens were visible) was already packed and due to the crowds already in place on the Long Walk I ended up 4 deep in the crowd. The opportunities for “parade shots” were therefore seriously reduced and I turned my attention to more crowd related shots and capturing the general atmosphere instead.
Watching the parade later on TV I would have been better shooting in the main streets of Windsor where the number of people watching was lower, there were huge union jacks lining the streets and the castle walls could have formed the backdrop.
The troops were delayed going into the castle (there was a huge bottle neck) which meant that only one set of planes were able to fly past at the allotted time. The remainder were delayed from 11.00 to 12.30 and I was unable to stay to photograph them.
