KN3A0608(2)(2)The boys can earn an hour of time on the computer by eating their 5-a-day (which is working much longer term than the bribe of ice cream for dinner). They are still amazingly proactive – well to be honest, Sx is. Gx is always good about eating fruit and vegetables but the change in Sx is great as he LOVES his computer time. (Dx is not bothered about computer time and I still working on wha bribe might work for him)

KN3A0608(2) But sometimes an hour is not enough especially in the holidays when the weather isn’t so great. So I also offer the option of extra time if they play with their little brother. Poor Dx is often searching for someone to play with him – Lx rarely “plays” and his brothers are too involved in their own pastimes.

KN3A0600(2)

It is lovely to see how much he enjoys playing with them when they do it – and he doesn’t really understand that they are doing it for a reward. Today I watched through the window as they played some ridiculous catching game of Sx’s invention and he hammed it up so that Dx was in fits of giggles 😀

KN3A0635(2)We spent the day today with friends who have expanded the already impressive list of things in their house which make it appeal to my children.

KN3A0693(2) KN3A0678(2)It now includes, nerf guns, a selection of great X box games, a pool, huge garden, trampoline…and a puppy!

KN3A0639(2)KN3A0646(2)Lx took some time to get used to how he would push his nose into her and try to lick her hand. she was very nervous to start with and I had to be quite insistent to get her to offer her hand to him. Once she got used to him, there was no stopping her though!

KN3A0611(2)

KN3A0612(4)(Good girl – she knows to get down to their level when taking photos :D)

KN3A0648(2)KN3A0650(2)

KN3A0661(2)The fact it was a grey overcast day didn’t dampen anyone’s fun and the family came away asking as per usual “When can we go there again???”

So the sunshine deserted us today but the children still had fun.

KN3A0554(3)KN3A0555(3)There were racing cars, lego, computers, TV, farm sets, helicopters, iphones and ipods to be played with  film to be watched together as a family (although “Pink Panther” wasn’t as funny as I remembered – maybe we need to be watching “Return of the Pink Panther” if I can get them to trust me enough to try it) and there were pancakes and popcorn to be eaten (not at the same time!)

Who cares about the weather?

(And I played too – with my macro lens which was used for all today’s photos…)

KN3A0326(4)So we relaxed all morning, ate lunch outside and then set off in the sunshine to pick up Gx from cub camps (where he had spent a wonderful time – and luckily was warm enough at night!)

KN3A0318(3)On the way home we called in at the local parkour/BMX park and playground for a quick hour of play.

Sx and his Dad went to the rugby today, Gx was still at cub camp which meant a quiet lazy day for the little two and me.

“Are we staying home today?”
“Yes”
“ALL day???”
“yes”

“yayyyyy!!!”

I couldnt even persuade them out into the garden but thought they obviously needed some “downtime”. They had a nap in the afternoon which I think they needed too.

The only time they took advantage of the glorious sunshine was having their lunch outside – and even then Lx decided she needed a cardigan 🙂

KN3A0298(2)

(and yes – those are his pyjamas! He decided today should be a pyjama day – he really hates getting changed!)

Gx went off to cub camp this morning and the rest of us headed to Legoland together with Matt.

Dx was brave enough to try the ride with Daddy where you pull yourself up on a rope and then drop a little and pull yourself up again.

KN3A0246(2)

We went to a new 4D show “Lego Legends of Chima” but Lx was nervous and refused to even put her glasses on let alone watch.

KN3A0272(2)

She enjoyed the Sky Ride though.

KN3A0253(2)But later had another attack of the nerves having been keen to go on the driving school ride, she then wailed and kicked up a real fuss when it was time to go on. I knew she was just nervous though and so dragged her across to the car and strapped her in (feeling like a terrible mother as she screamed “I don’t want to do it!!!!!) She then set off at quite a pace, didn’t crash at all – but did look really unhappy throughout.

KN3A0277(2)

Then she came off and said “Next time we come can we do that again”. Phew. Being a mean mummy was worth it! I would never “force” any of the others like I do with her but I know sometimes she needs it and then usually discovers she likes the food/ride/experience I have pushed her to do. It is hard for me though as I never know for sure whether she will come off traumatised and really DIDN’T want to do it.

Tonight Sx went out as a cub and came home as a scout. It was the night of his “investiture”

KN3A0184(3)We all went along to watch. He was issued with his uniform – which is obviously built to stand the test of time as the trousers are currently about 6 inches too long!

KN3A0192(2)He is quite a bit shorter than some around him!

KN3A0191(2)As part of the ceremony, the special scout handshake is used to smuggle all the badges into the new scout’s hands that need sewing on before the next meeting. However unfortunately – they don’t come complete with the knowledge of how to sew them on. That joy is left to the proud mothers!

So with the children at school and the rain pouring down I looked for some photo inspiration.

And found some willing volunteers.

KN3A0120(sm)When I was pregnant with Sx a friend advised us to buy his first teddy. So we looked long and hard – and found “Bear”

KN3A0134(2)For a while he wasn’t his favourite bedtime buddy though. Instead he loved “Louis” a lamb bought in Looe, Cornwall by my parents on his first holiday we spent with them when he was just 2 months old. Unfortunately Louis wasnt washable so when Sx was poorly we had to substitute him for another toy at night in case he got mucky when Sx was ill.

KN3A0140(sm)

So we lived and learnt…and decided next time to be sure to get a washable teddy, and to get two so that if one had to be washed or got lost somewhere we had another we could use.

Sx is still the child who loves his soft toys the best. He will take about 15 assorted toys to bed with him given half the chance (and his dressing gown and a soft blanket to increase the cuddliness in his bed). He roams the house seeking out unused soft toys from the other children’s rooms to add to his collection at night. Since he was about 3 Bear has been his companion of choice to take on holiday – but at night he is joined by Puddles the dog, Kitty Cat, Garfield (known as “Cat” at home) and assorted other ruffians

When I was pregnant with Gx, we bought “Teddy”. He has always been Gx’s favourite bedtime toy and has seen a few repairs which have meant “Teddy’s uncle” (aka Teddy #2) has come to stay for a while. I’m not entirely sure where Teddy’s uncle is right now but he might be due another visit while Teddy has an operation on a loose side seam!KN3A0126(2)

The only other toy with a place in Gx’s affections is “Mooey” – a cow bought by his godfather when he was a baby. Sx had Louis – so Gx had Mooey. KN3A0129(2)

When I was pregnant with Lx we bought this bear. He is probably my favourite but it had taken a loooong time to find a “traditional” teddy which was washable. I don’t know why it was so hard. We decided that if Lx was a girl we would call the bear after the boy’s name we had picked – and vice versa. We were happy to do that as she was going to be our last baby as I had been so so poorly throughout the pregnancy I couldn’t face the idea of another.

So this is Dx Bear. Only of course, within weeks of having Lx, we decided perhaps we “could” go through another pregnancy and we didn’t want her to be our last child. SO we ended up using our “boy’s name” for her for our 4th child  leaving us with Dx Bear – and Dx. And in a strange twist of fate, Lx doesn’t really like cuddly toys and refuses to have them in her room. So Dx Bear has been adopted by Dx who loves having him in bed with him.

KN3A0142So when I was pregnant with Dx we bought him a bear. Having used the names “Bear” and “Teddy” we were stuck with what to call him. We decided on Roosevelt (after the original Teddy). He has remained one of Dx’s favourites but like Sx he loves his soft toys and so Roosevelt doesn’t occupy an exclusive position.

KN3A0152(sm)

This is “Christmas Bear” bought for Dx by my late Uncle Joe. Despite his size Christmas Bear was #1 bear for a long time and is still one of the favourites allowed a “pillow end” position.KN3A0147(2)

And the newest addition to the front runners is “Rabbity” which Dx got at a Build a Bear party a couple of years ago. There is also Buster the dog (given y Santa at breakfast in 2011) Picachut (which Gx bought for him at a school bring and buy sale) and Stitch (from our Disney holiday this year). Sometimes there is barely room for Dx in the bed!KN3A0154(sm)

“I’m making the war” Dx told me.

KN3A0155(sm)“Were there horses in the war cos I’ve got one from the farm playset? Were there skeletons? Were there pirates?”

KN3A0177(sm)“I’ve got a sign saying “Come this way” – that’s by Hitler to try and make the soldiers go the wrong way. But they won’t”

KN3A0158(sm)

I hope his experience of war is only ever as an innocent childhood game.

After watching Lx in her French Assembly in the afternoon (singing and dancing with a big smile on her face) it was time to go back to school in the evening for the dance festival. Each year of children did different dances ranging from Bollywood style to maypole dancing, from street dance to the Beach Boys.

They had wonderful weather – and a wonderful time.

Dx needed a “black or white t shirt preferably with sparkles, ideally stars”. Strangely (!) we had nothing that fit the bill but in a moment of Mummy Magic I created this masterpiece from a black thermal top

KN3A9635(2)Dx’s class danced to “Reach for the Stars”

Here he is acting out the part with the lyrics “When the world, leaves you feeling blue…”

KN3A9695(2)

Lx is amazing at performing now – she loves it. A far cry from the little girl who wouldn’t even discuss being in the Christmas play just a couple of years ago.

KN3A9856(2)

Gx’s class did a High School Musical number

IMG_0014(3)

I learnt something tonight too: “Check if your child is planning to take their shoes off and wave their feet in the air. If so check the heels of their socks for wear and tear”
